For the third consecutive year, Chesterfield County Public Schools’ budget document was recognized with two national awards: the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association.
“Chesterfield County Public Schools’ budget continues to strategically reinvest in public education in the county,” said Dr. Javaid Siddiqi, chair of the Chesterfield County School Board. “Our staff works diligently to provide an extensive amount of information in a format that is transparent and user friendly for our community.”
The Meritorious Budget Award is awarded for excellence in the preparation and issuance of the school division’s Fiscal Year 2017 operating budget. The award promotes and recognizes excellence in school budget presentation and enhances school business officials’ skills in development, analyzing and presenting a school system budget. The prestigious award is presented to school districts that meet or exceed the program’s stringent criteria.
“The budget is an excellent document, which includes a wealth of information in graphic and narrative form,” judges from the Association of School Business Officials International Review Committee wrote about Chesterfield County Public Schools’ financial plan. “The document is user-friendly for the average taxpayer with lots of data presented in different forms to meet the needs of varied users. The district is to be congratulated for their budget submission.”
The Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and represents a significant achievement for an organization. The award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff members to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the award, the organization has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines that are designed to assess how well an organization’s budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device.
According to Government Finance Officer Association, “Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.”
Earlier this year, the Chesapeake Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association also recognized Chesterfield County Public Schools’ FY 2017 Financial Plan Highlights with an Award of Excellence.
“We are honored to be recognized for the FY 2017 budget document,” said Chesterfield County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James Lane. “We strive for the highest standards throughout our budget process, including working hard to provide reports that are clear yet comprehensive for those interested in our community.”
