Feb. 15 is now a full day of school in Chesterfield

Schools in Chesterfield County were closed four days (Jan. 22 and Jan. 25-27) and opened two hours late two days (Jan. 28-29) because of snow and ice.

While meeting the minimum state requirement of 990 hours, the Chesterfield County Public Schools calendar is designed to provide the time necessary for teachers to deliver and students to master the curriculum. To make up some of the lost instructional time, the student and staff holiday scheduled for Feb. 15 has been canceled. Feb. 15 is now a full instructional day.

When the School Board approved the 2015-16 calendar on Dec. 9, 2014, the document stated how any time lost to bad weather or other circumstances might be made up: “The superintendent determines makeup time. Jan. 18 and May 30 will not be used for makeup time. Makeup time may include the lengthening of some instructional days and the loss of the Feb. 15 holiday and the early release days of Jan. 27 and Feb. 24. The School Board retains the right to modify this calendar.” This information was included in the parent handbook distributed at the start of the school year and posted on mychesterfieldschools.com.

Another calendar change related to snow days is that report cards will be distributed not on Feb. 12 as originally planned but on Feb. 15 to give teachers a bit more time to record grades.
