Dawn Slagle from Manchester High received a grant for $4,168 for a ropes course experience and classroom materials for students participating in the Success program at Manchester High. The ropes challenge course and materials are focused on connecting the student and making them more successful in the classroom.
Slagle applied for a Making a Creative Difference in Education (MCD) grant through the Chesterfield Education Foundation. Ropes challenge courses provide participants with a unique opportunity to work together on a series of problem solving, group decision-making and positive risk-taking activities. The group of students went on Friday, Oct. 14, to the University of Richmond’s ropes course to have a day of fun, team-building and personal growth.
Slagle works with 10th grade students at Manchester High School and manages the Success program for students who may need extra support towards being successful in high school. Last year was her first year in the program, and she got to see first-hand the many obstacles that students have to overcome and the many challenges these students face on a daily basis. Through this program, students receive extra support, and Slagle has made it her mission to explore new opportunities to help them succeed.
“By taking my students on a ropes course full of obstacles, this gives them a chance to build confidence and trust and partipcate in a great team-building opportunity,” said Slagle. As a Spartan Race competitor, she knows how emporing it is to complete a ropes course, and she hopes her students experienced that on Friday.
The Chesterfield Education Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing quality pre-K-12 public education in Chesterfield, supports CCPS by awarding MCD grants to teachers and schools throughout the county. The MCD program is designed to encourage and support innovative and new instructional strategies that will benefit Chesterfield’s schools and operations. Throughout the last 18 years, MCD grants have awarded more than $330,000 for 85 innovative educational projects.
