Anticipating an unusually high turnout for the presidential primaries, the Chesterfield Electoral Board asked in October that Chesterfield County Public Schools be closed to students on March 1. School leaders agreed that the teaching-and-learning process could be disrupted at the nearly 50 schools used as polling precincts. With polls open 6 a.m.-7 p.m. March 1 and with the potential of 40,000 visitors in schools, Chesterfield County Public Schools agreed to cancel school for students on March 1, changing that date to a student holiday and teacher workday.
To make up the lost instructional time, early-release days previously scheduled for Jan. 27 and Feb. 24 were eliminated. Jan. 27 and Feb. 24 are now full instructional days for teachers and students. This change in the 2015-16 school calendar was first communicated to employees and parents via digital newsletters on Oct. 22.
