Salem Church Middle eighth-grader Jayln Jimenez Garcia represented Virginia in the National Spanish Spelling Bee on July 13-16 in San Antonio, Texas, where she beat out more than 15 competitors in the spelling bee.
Jayln’s ride to the national competition began when she won the Chesterfield County Spanish Spelling Bee on March 16. From there, Jayln went on to compete in the Virginia Spanish Spelling Bee, where she beat out contestants from across the state to be crowned the winner and advance to the national bee.
“The Chesterfield County Spelling Bee competition was the first-ever for the county, and we were thrilled to send our top three competitors to compete at the Virginia Spanish Spelling Bee,” said John Erbach, School Board vice chair and representative for the Dale District. “We are so proud of Jayln and her accomplishments as the Virginia winner.”
The National Spanish Spelling Bee is hosted by the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education with the support of sponsors throughout the country. WorldStrides Educational Student Travel sponsored Jayln’s travel to compete in the bee.
