The U.S. Department of Education yesterday named Winterpock Elementary a National Blue Ribbon School. Only 337 schools were honored nationwide.

The National Blue Ribbon program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools for their overall academic excellence or for their progress in closing achievement gaps. Winterpock Elementary achieved National Blue Ribbon status as an exemplary high performing school.

“Congratulations go to Winterpock students, families, teachers, administrators and the entire Winterpock community for achieving this national recognition,” said Dr. Marcus Newsome, superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools. “Winterpock Elementary is having quite a year! Just two weeks ago, we were celebrating its achievement of reading almost half a million minutes during the summer — more than any other Chesterfield elementary school. I am proud of Winterpock Elementary for its academic success and for putting in the hard work it takes to achieve that success.”

Winterpock Elementary, which opened in March 2008, has about 870 students in grades K-5. Here are the school’s 2014 passing rates on Standards of Learning tests:

  • English….. 92 percent
  • math……… 96 percent
  • history…… 97 percent
  • science…… 96 percent

“Since day one, Winterpock Elementary has taken pride in its focus on excellence,” Principal Gloria Cooper wrote in the National Blue Ribbon application. “As a traditionally high performing school, we have not rested on past performance but strive to move all our students to the next level. With consistently strong instruction, student performance over the last five years has yielded an average advanced pass rate of over 60% in math and reading. …

“Our academic success is mirrored in our level of community engagement. … We call this the ‘Winterpock Way,’ combining a strong sense of academic excellence … with a high value placed on positive contributions to the community. The ‘Winterpock Way’ is the foundation of our school culture, where we recognize every student for being a productive citizen and achieving to the very best of their ability.”

Winterpock Elementary is the fifth Chesterfield school to achieve National Blue Ribbon status: Grange Hall Elementary was honored in 2009, Robious Elementary in 2005, Clover Hill Elementary in 2003 and James River High in 2000.

Winterpock Elementary representatives will join other 2014 National Blue Ribbon honorees Nov. 10-11 for a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
