Christopher Averill of Cosby High School is selected as 2016 Teacher of the Year for Chesterfield County Public Schools

Bearing balloons, flowers, cakes and the element of surprise, Chesterfield County Public Schools leaders swooped into three schools today to name the school system’s top Teachers of the Year.

  • Cosby High history teacher Christopher Averill is Chesterfield’s Teacher of the Year, as well as Chesterfield’s High School Teacher of the Year. He began his career as a history teacher in 1989 at Clover Hill High; since 2006 he has taught history and served as the social studies department chair at Cosby High. Averill earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from James Madison University.
  • Sherrill Kauffman is Chesterfield’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year. She is the literacy specialist at Robious Elementary. She began her education career in 1991 and has taught in several central Virginia school systems. Kauffman joined Chesterfield County Public Schools in 2011 in her current position. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Brianne Gunn is Chesterfield’s Middle School Teacher of the Year. She teaches sixth-grade science at Falling Creek Middle. Gunn joined Chesterfield County Public Schools in 2011 in her current position. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In letters to the Teachers of the Year, Superintendent Marcus Newsome wrote, “Teaching is a collaborative profession — consulting with colleagues, sharing ideas with administrators and partnering with parents. Teaching and teamwork have more in common than just the first three letters of each word. But in every school and at every level, certain teachers stand out. These teachers demonstrate care and compassion, stress the importance of rigor and relationships and do the extra things necessary to help move our students toward success.”

Annually, every Chesterfield County school selects a Teacher of the Year. Chesterfield County Public Schools selects from those honorees an Elementary School Teacher of the Year, a Middle School Teacher of the Year and a High School Teacher of the Year, then chooses the countywide Teacher of the Year from those three honorees. The next step is submitting Averill’s nomination to the Virginia Department of Education, which will select eight regional Teachers of the Year from across the state, then will choose the Virginia Teacher of the Year from the eight regional winners.
