FY 2015 budget proposal encourages reinvestment in Chesterfield County Public Schools

Superintendent Marcus Newsome presented his FY 2015 budget proposal tonight during the Chesterfield County School Board meeting. Calling the proposal “a springboard toward reinvesting in education in Chesterfield County,” Dr. Newsome said it is time to start restoring what the recession took away from public education in Chesterfield County:

“For the past five years, we have been asked to do more with less. We have done so, admirably. But there is a cost for not providing the resources necessary to maintain excellence. That cost includes an ever-growing plate of responsibilities for all employees and higher class sizes that deprive students of individualized instruction.

“I believe our local leaders and our community support a reinvestment in schools. In the coming weeks, we will have important conversations about what a first-choice school division looks like and how much it costs. We must decide together if we are willing to make that investment.”

Based on student enrollment, Chesterfield County Public Schools is among the 75 largest school systems in the United States. The budget proposal anticipates 473 additional students, for a total of 58,867. The $568.8 million budget proposal includes $6.3 million to decrease class size by hiring more than 100 teachers, $1.5 million to open the new technical center on Hull Street Road and $3.8 million for a 1 percent raise for employees.
