New superintendent to be sworn in June 23

DrLaneDr. James F. Lane will take his oath of office as superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools at noon June 23 in the School Administration Building, 9900 Krause Road. Lane’s appointment was announced in March by the Chesterfield County School Board. Lane will take over July 1 from Dr. Marcus J. Newsome, who served 10 years as Chesterfield County Public Schools superintendent and is moving on to become superintendent in Petersburg.

Superintendent in Goochland County since 2012, Lane was recently named the 2017 Virginia Superintendent of the Year. Lane created a balanced assessment model in Goochland that has become a model throughout Virginia and advocated for the removal of burdens related to state-mandated testing by creating innovative classrooms. He was instrumental in creating a 1-to-1 technology plan for Goochland students that has been recognized nationally. Lane’s work in promoting greater student outcomes through data analytics was recognized with the National Flashlight Award from the Data Quality Campaign this year.

Lane began his career in 2000, serving as an award-winning band director and assistant principal in Durham (N.C.) Public Schools. He has also served as an assistant principal at Carver Middle School in Chesterfield County and as a middle school principal and assistant superintendent, both in Middlesex County. Before joining Goochland as its superintendent, Lane was superintendent in Middlesex County Public Schools. At that time, he was the youngest superintendent in Virginia. In 2014, Lane was named one of Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40.

Lane earned a Doctor of Education from the University of Virginia and a second master’s degree from North Carolina State University. He earned his first master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He regularly serves as an adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University and the University of Richmond. Lane and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Charlie and Kerrington.
