Mother’s Day tea

Plant sale

The Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Center school will hold its annual plant sale 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. May 6 at 6819 Mimms Loop, which is next to the Chesterfield County Museum and Lane B. Ramsey Administration Building. Students have developed life skills as they have grown these plants to sell: ferns ($10), hanging baskets ($10), container flowering plants ($5), vegetables ($2) and herbs ($2). Paws Walk

Evergreen Elementary will hold a Paws Walk to benefit the Richmond Animal League 9:45-10:30 a.m. May 6. Two fourth-grade classes will walk as many laps around the bus loop as possible; they have been collecting pledges from their families and community members. A volunteer from the Richmond Animal League visited to explain initiatives to help animals, and the students will soon create posters to encouraging people to adopt animals from the shelter. Prekindergarten application

At 19 schools, Chesterfield County Public Schools offers a limited number of prekindergarten spots to provide school-readiness skills to eligible children with the greatest need. Children who will be 4 years old by Sept. 30 and who are zoned for a school that offers prekindergarten can apply. There are no exceptions to age and residency requirements. Families can apply for prekindergarten at Perrymont, 8610 Perrymont Road, between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on these remaining dates: May 3 and May 10. For more information, go to


Book drive

Reams Road Elementary will hold its annual book drive throughout May. All students are invited to donate gently used books. At the end of the month, students will be able to browse the donated books and choose at least one book to keep as a way to kick off their summer reading. For more information, call 674-1370.


Swimming lessons

Second-graders from Davis Elementary will learn to swim on Tuesdays through May 31 at SwimRVA. Lessons run 10-10:45 a.m., 10:45-11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. For more information, call 674-1310.

Special Education Advisory Committee

The Special Education Advisory Committee seeks to inform and involve parents in special education matters that affect more than 7,000 students with disabilities in Chesterfield County Public Schools. The committee will meet 5-6:30 p.m. May 11 to discuss mental health and trauma-informed care. The committee meets at the Career and Technical Center @ Hull, 13900 Hull Street Road.
