Student Registration

School Entrance Age

Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30 of the school year to be eligible to attend kindergarten. There are no exceptions to this state requirement.

Daylong prekindergarten programs for at-risk 4-year-olds are available at a few elementary schools. Also, there is a prekindergarten program for children with disabilities who must be 2 years old by Sept. 30 to enroll. Each year, Chesterfield County Public Schools conducts Child Find to locate children with disabilities who need special education services or Section 504 services. If you suspect your child may have a disability, contact the Office of Special Education at 639-8698 or your child’s home school.

Residency

Students must reside with a parent or legal guardian in Chesterfield County to attend Chesterfield County Public Schools. The school system may re-verify residency any year a student is enrolled in Chesterfield County Public Schools. Students attend the school in their attendance area unless a waiver is granted or they are accepted into a center-based or specialty program.

Foreign Exchange Student Procedure

New students should register during office hours at their home school. For school attendance zone information, use the find my school feature or call 318-8743.

To register for school, proof of county residency is required by providing one of these documents:

  • lease for at least one year or deed of a residence in Chesterfield County
  • contract or lease free of contingencies to occupy a Chesterfield residence within two months of the date of enrollment
  • resident manager’s letter on company letterhead stating that residence is a corporate residence in Chesterfield
  • weekly receipts for temporary residence in a hotel or motel for up to 60 days (requires renewal or evidence of more permanent residency within 60 days of enrollment)
  • Parents submitting a “lives with” form when registering must bring the person they live with. That person must provide proof of county residency, and the parent of the incoming student must provide two supporting documents with their name and correct address. Also, the parent of the incoming student must provide two supporting documents with his or her name and correct. address.

In addition, a student enrolling in a Virginia public school for the first time must provide

  • certified original birth certificate
  • record of a physical examination (performed within the past 12 months)
  • updated records listing dates of each state-required immunization. Documentation is required of age-appropriate immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP), polio, hepatitis  and varicella (chickenpox). A booster of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) is required for all students entering sixth grade. Three doses of properly spaced human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine are required for girls, with the first dose administered before entering sixth grade. Parents or guardians may elect that their child not receive the HPV vaccine. Documentation of HPV exemption or vaccination is not required; if provided, documentation will be accepted by the school.

It is helpful if transferring students provide a report card from their previous school and, if applicable, a copy of an Individualized Education Program. After registration is completed, the Chesterfield school will request a transfer of records from the previous school.

Kindergarten registration day

Registration day for children who will enter kindergarten in September 2016 will take place April 14, 2016, at every elementary school.

What is the age requirement for kindergarten?

When will kindergarten registration take place?
Between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on April 14, 2016, parents should register their children at the school they are zoned to attend. To find the correct school, parents may call 318-8743 or go online to mychesterfieldschools.com, go to the parents section, then click “find my school.”

Does the child need to accompany the parent to registration?
Yes. On registration day, children will be given the Brigance kindergarten screening, which usually takes about 15 minutes.

What information should parents bring to registration?

  • parent’s photo ID
  • child’s certified original birth certificate
  • proof of residency by providing one of these documents:
    • lease for at least one year or deed of a residence in Chesterfield County
    • contract or lease free of contingencies to occupy a Chesterfield County residence within two months of the date of enrollment
    • resident manager’s letter on company letterhead stating that residence is a corporate residence in Chesterfield County
    • weekly receipts for temporary residence in a hotel or motel for up to 60 days (requires renewal or evidence of more permanent residency within 60 days of enrollment)
    • If you plan to submit a “lives with” form, the person you live with must come with you to registration and provide a lease, deed or one of the other proofs of residency. Also, you must provide two supporting documents showing your name and correct address.

What if a parent is unable to attend on April 14?
Please make every effort to register your child on April 14. If this is not possible, call the school to set up an appointment as soon as possible.

Applying for Prekindergarten

Chesterfield County Public Schools offers a limited number of prekindergarten spots to provide school-readiness skills to eligible children with the greatest need. There are no exceptions to age and residency requirements.

Who can apply?

Children who will be 4 years old by Sept. 30, 2016, and who are zoned for a school that offers prekindergarten can apply. Acceptance into prekindergarten is not first come, first served. Acceptance is based on program requirements, which may include income restrictions.

When and where are applications accepted?

Chesterfield County Public Schools offers prekindergarten in19 schools. Families can apply at Perrymont (8610 Perrymont Road) between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on these dates:

  • March 1 for Ettrick, Harrowgate and Salem elementaries
  • March 8 for Crestwood and Chalkley elementaries
  • March 15 for Beulah and Hopkins elementaries
  • March 22 for Bensley, Bellwood and Ecoff elementaries
  • April 5 for Elizabeth Scott, Providence and Reams elementaries
  • April 12 for Falling Creek and Davis elementaries
  • April 19 for Crenshaw, Hening, Marguerite Christian and Jacobs elementaries
  • April 26, May 3 and May 10 for all 19 schools

Your child must come with you when applying
Each child will be given a brief developmental screening.

What do you need to bring on application day?

  1. parent’s photo ID
  2. child’s certified original birth certificate
  3. proof of income by providing one of these documents:
    • W-2 form for each working parent
    • 2015 tax form
    • letter from an employer indicating period of employment and salary for each working parent
    • two recent pay stubs for all jobs worked by any parent living in the home If applicable, also bring SNAP, TANF, SSI, SSA, unemployment and child support documents.
  4. proof of residency by providing one of these documents:
    • lease for at least one year or deed of a residence in Chesterfield County
    • contract or lease free of contingencies to occupy a Chesterfield County residence within two months of the date of enrollment
    • resident manager’s letter on company letterhead stating that residence is a corporate residence in Chesterfield County
    • weekly receipts for temporary residence in a hotel or motel for up to 60 days (requires renewal or evidence of more permanent residency within 60 days of enrollment)
    • Parents submitting a “lives with” form must bring the person they live with and that person must provide a lease, a deed or one of the other proofs of residency. Also, the parent of the incoming student must provide two documents (recent bills, for example) with his or her correct name and address.

Additional information

Applying does not guarantee acceptance. Applications received by May 13 will be reviewed equally. Prekindergarten applications are taken year-round. Students who are not initially accepted are placed on a waiting list, in case a spot opens during the year. If you have questions, call 804-279-7357.
