Proposed Manchester MS to Providence MS Zone Adjustment

Posted on

Providing a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment for students remains a primary goal for Chesterfield County Public Schools. With the passage of the 2013 school bond referendum, the School Board has implemented a school construction plan that will revitalize or replace some of our oldest facilities. A thorough renovation of Providence Middle and the construction of a replacement Manchester Middle are projects that are currently underway or in the planning stages.

As discussed in February 2016 when the School Board declined to take action on a countywide proposal, redistricting would become necessary when renovations were complete and/or replacement schools open. With the Providence Middle renovation scheduled to be complete for the start of the 2018-19 school year, the School Board is prepared to balance enrollments at Providence and Manchester Middle based on the below enrollments and school design capacities.

  • Manchester Middle’s student enrollment at the start of the 2017-18 school year was 1,405 students. The replacement Manchester Middle, scheduled to open in Fall 2020, has a design capacity of 1,104 students.
  • Providence Middle’s student enrollment at the start of the 2017-18 school year was 847 students. When completed, the renovated Providence Middle will have a design capacity of 1,101 students.

To balance enrollments and make the most efficient use of available seats, the School Board will consider a two-part proposal that would balance enrollments. The proposal includes

  • Moving nearly 200 students from Manchester Middle to Providence Middle
  • Creating at least one additional middle school center-based gifted program and move approximately 100 students to that program

To share information and to gather community input, the School Board will host two community meetings.

  • Families proposed to be redistricted to Providence Middle are invited to attend a Manchester-to-Providence redistricting meeting on March 29 at 7 p.m. at Manchester Middle School.

Parents of Bailey Bridge, Swift Creek and Tomahawk Creek middle school CBG students currently attending Manchester Middle are invited to a parents meeting on March 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Career and Technical Center @ Hull. Enter in Door 20 of the building, located at 13900 Hull Street Road.
