School starting times to be discussed March 27

Updated March 24, 2015

The Chesterfield County School Board will continue discussing potential changes to school starting times during its quarterly work session at 10 a.m. March 27 at the Career and Technical Center @ Hull, 13900 Hull Street Road.

Having looked at a number of options, the board will receive information about these two possible schedules:

  • high schools: 7:45 a.m.-2:15 p.m.
  • middle schools: 8:35 a.m.-3:05 p.m.
  • elementary schools: 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

AND

  • elementary schools: 7:45 a.m.-2:15 p.m.
  • middle schools: 8:35 a.m.-3:05 p.m.
  • high schools: 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

School division staff members will present information on academic benefits and the potential of scheduling remediation efforts before elementary schools open rather than after they dismiss, costs associated with such a change and resources that would be needed. No changes would be implemented until the 2016-17 school year.

The conversations move Chesterfield County Public Schools closer to recommendations made by the school division’s Wellness Council and studies conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The public is invited to listen and learn more at the March 27 work session, in advance of a May 12 public engagement session about school starting times.
