School system budget wins national awards

budgetcover_For the second year in a row, the budget document of Chesterfield County Public Schools has achieved two national awards. The award-winning FY 2016 budget is available online at

Meritorious Budget Award

Chesterfield County Public Schools won a Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International. This is the second consecutive year the school system has achieved this recognition, which is conferred only on school districts that meet or exceed these stringent criteria:

  • provide understandable and clear budget guidelines
  • define and encourage state-of-the-art budget practices
  • promote short- and long-term goals
  • encourage sound fiscal management practices
  • facilitate professional growth for the school system’s budget staff members

Here are specific comments from the Association of School Business Officials International review committee about the FY 2016 budget: “The use of spreadsheets, charts and graphs throughout the Executive Summary gives the reader understandable snap-shots of budgetary information. … The Chesterfield County Public Schools budget is a user-friendly budget that puts numeric, narrative and graphic displays to good use.”

Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to Chesterfield County Public Schools for the second straight year.

The association stated, “This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. Its attainment represents a significant achievement.” To earn this recognition, the budget must meet nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation and must serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.
