STEAM explodes across Chesterfield schools

Community is welcome to attend free events showcasing student skills

STEAM has exploded across Chesterfield County Public Schools, causing the annual STEAM fair to split into two events: a March 21 STEAM Expo for middle and high schools and a May 9 STEAMmania for elementary schools.

Student research projects will be on display at the STEAM Expo.STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, and STEAM instruction is one strategy Chesterfield County Public Schools is using to engage students and achieve Goal 1 of its strategic plan: “All learners will acquire, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information to solve meaningful problems and to achieve success as productive, thriving global citizens. Students will learn through active engagement, collaboration and exploration of personal interests, talents and ambitions across disciplines.”

During the STEAM Expo on March 21, enthusiastic problem-solving and teamwork by middle and high school students will be on display. Free and open to the public, the
STEAM Expo will take place 8 a.m.-1 p.m. March 21 at the Career and Technical Center @ Hull, 13900 Hull Street Road.

Popular STEAM activities are minute-to-win-it challenges, such as stacking five empty soda cans on a paper plate floating in water or keeping both a feather and a balloon in the air using only one’s breath. In addition to school competitions, there will be opportunities on March 21 for parents, siblings and teachers to participate in minute-to-win-it challenges.

The March 21 event will also include

  • timed competitions that challenge school teams to solve problems involving engineering, science, math, art or music
  • displays of student research in these areas: biological, environmental, physical or innovations
  • a Career Connections area where agencies and businesses will demonstrate workplace applications of STEAM, including 3-D printing and forensics
  • tours of the newly opened Career and Technical Center @ Hull
  • training for students and parents about how to use apps that incorporate STEAM concepts
  • an awards ceremony that starts at 12:30 p.m.
