Two Chesterfield County Public Schools students won the Virginia War Memorial 2016 Veterans Day Essay Contest, and the students both read their winning essays at the Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11 at the Virginia War Memorial. The winner for the middle school category is Jordan Bowe, an eighth-grade student at Matoaca Middle, who wrote an essay titled “Could You Walk In Their Boots.” The high school category winner is Lauren Faherty, an 11th-grade student at Manchester High who wrote “My Family’s Love of America.”
The 2016 Virginia War Memorial Veterans Day Essay Contest was open to all public, private and homeschooled middle and high school students in Virginia. Students were asked to write a personal essay of 400-500 words based on a quote from a speech given by World War II Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway at the dedication of the Virginia War Memorial on Feb. 29, 1956.
Each winner received a $200 check donated by Haley BuickGMC of Midlothian and were congratulated by Gov. McAuliffe, who also served as the keynote speaker for the ceremony. The winning essays can be found on the Virginia War Memorial’s website at www.vawarmemorial.org.
