Winterpock Elementary teacher to be honored with first-ever VASCD Teacher-in-Action grant

Winterpock Elementary second-grade teacher Stephanie Peterson was selected today as the first winner of the Virginia Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (VASCD) Teacher-in-Action grant. Peterson will receive a $1,000 award for materials and technology to accelerate the implementation of project-based learning units in her second grade classroom.

“Chesterfield County Public Schools is proud to have innovative and creative teachers like Stephanie who are bringing new ideas and technology to our classrooms,” said Matoaca District School Board member Rob Thompson. “Through programs like this, our teachers are receiving recognition for their hard work and funding to support new and engaging teaching methods to create a nurturing learning environment for our students.”

VASCD is a professional association that recognizes and supports innovative, evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning.  VASCD’s board of directors established the Teacher-in-Action program to support teachers who learn innovative ideas at the annual conference and want to apply them in their own classrooms.

With the grant, Peterson plans to collect data on levels of student engagement, from students and their parents, as she works to design her school year around four project-based learning (PBL) units that incorporate all the Standards of Learning for her grade level. The funding will help to pay for various instructional supplies needed for the four units. It will also include the purchase of a Swivl camera to capture classroom information about engagement with PBL instruction to be analyzed by Peterson and her colleagues.

“VASCD is grateful for the opportunity to support a project that combines daily learning activities with an action research focus.” said VASCD Executive Director Laurie McCullough. “As Ms. Peterson expands the project-based work she and her students have begun, she will be collecting data related to levels of student engagement and achievement of learning goals. We’re excited to see the results.”

The Teacher-in-Action program requires recipients to “pay it forward” by sharing their projects and research findings through VASCD’s annual conference, blog and newsletters.
