Weekly Update – December 1, 2019

Dear Bon Air Families,

We had a great week at Bon Air Elementary!  We hope all of our families enjoyed their break, and we can’t wait to see our students again on Monday!

Bon Air Butterfly Garden:  A huge thank you to Mr. Zulauf for securing a grant for our school to install a new butterfly garden. We would also like to thank Dominion Power for their generous grant to make this garden a reality.  In addition to the grant funds, they also sent several volunteers to work on creating this garden for our school. We can’t wait to see the finished product this spring!

Rising 6th grade informational night at Robious Middle School:  The rising 6th grade informational night at Robious Middle School is scheduled for January 27, 2020.  Bon Air, Greenfield, and Hening are invited to attend from 6-7pm. Robious, Crestwood, and Bettie Weaver are invited from 7:15-8:15pm.

MAP Testing Window:  The 3rd-5th grade students will be taking their winter MAP assessments from December 9th through December 20th.  Assessment results will be sent home with students’ second nine weeks report cards.

Tuesday, December 3rd:  Suburban Village Bookmobile 4:30-5:30 PM

Wednesday, December 4th:  First grade field trip to Henricus Park

Tuesday, December 10th:  Third grade musical and PTA meeting at 6:45 PM

Wednesday, December 11th:  Fall picture make-up day

Thursday, December 12th:  Barnes and Noble night from 4:30-7:30 PM

Thursday, December 12th:  PTA Spirit Night at Five Guys at Chesterfield Towne Center from 4:00-8:00 PM

Monday, December 16th:  Gifted referral deadline for 2nd-4th grade

December 23rd-January 3rd- Winter break

Monday, January 6th-  School reopens

Important updates:   

Hour of Code:  During Library and Computer resource classes December 9th through the 13th, it is Hour of Code Week at Bon Air Elementary! And we need parent volunteers to help out with this. Coding experience is not required at all! Click here to see your child’s resource class and sign up. Please consider signing up for more than one class.  Computer Resource is in trailer 4 just outside the 4th Grade hallway. Thank you!

Inclusive Schools Week:  It’s time to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week!  This year’s theme is: Charting the Course for Inclusive Schools.  Although, we are inclusive all year long, we celebrate during the nationally recognized week in December.  During the week of December 2nd, students will be celebrating inclusive ideas throughout the week in the classroom.   Discussions in Morning Meeting, reading books that highlight disability awareness and students recognizing each other for being inclusive are just some of the activities students will be doing.

A Starry Night Dance for Special Education Students:  

What: A Starry Night Dance, a dance for K-5 special education students. This event will include music, games, crafts, and free food for all of our guests.

  • When: January 25, 2020 at 6:00-8:00PM
  • Why: This event is designed to give our participants their “night to shine” and feel recognized in our community.

Kids Fit & Fun Holiday Basketball Clinic

  • Robious Middle School
  • December 26, 27, 30 and 31
  • For girls and boys in 2nd grade through 8th grade
  • Clinic runs from 9am to 2pm
  • Clinic is designed to teach the fundamentals of shooting, passing, ball handling and defense

Watch DOGS:  If any fathers or father-figures would like to volunteer to spend a day volunteering in our school, please click here for the registration link to sign up.  If you would like to purchase a Watch DOGS t-shirt to wear when you volunteer, please click here.

Field Trip Chaperones: If you plan to be a field trip chaperone, please complete the online volunteer form at least 3 weeks before the date of the field trip.  To access this form, please click here. On this website, you can find the online volunteer form in both English and Spanish. Involved parents are critical to a school’s success!

Gifted Referral Deadlines:  

2nd-4th grade:  December 15th

Kindergarten and 1st grade:  March 15th

Clothing Donations:  The Bon Air PTA is partnering with the Crestwood PTA to participate in the Clothing to Cash Recycling Program.  Every material donated will be reused, repurposed, or recycled. The Bon Air and Crestwood PTA’s will be reimbursed for every pound collected.  The collection bin is located in the BAES parking lot by the cafeteria. This is a great opportunity to clean out your closet and help both PTAs raise money for our schools!
