Chesterfield County Public Schools will hold Kindergarten Registration Day for the Class of 2033 on April 16 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. 

Families of incoming kindergarten students are strongly encouraged to preregister, completing required paperwork online for free and saving time on the actual Kindergarten Registration Day.

The Chesterfield County School Board approved the 2020-21 school year calendars during its February business meeting, expressing its appreciation to those who provided feedback and input throughout the calendar adoption process and noting that several changes had been made due to constituents’ voices.

Notable changes from the original draft presented in January include: moving parent-teacher conference day to earlier in November; reinstating Presidents Day as a student/staff holiday; and making the Friday before Spring Break a full-day holiday for students and staff instead of a three-hour early release.

The per-student allocation given to schools to support discretionary spending for instructional supplies and academic supports would increase for the first time in more than 20 years, based on a proposal to invest nearly $3.4 million into Chesterfield County schools during the 2020-21 school year.

“We believe it’s time that the school division starts paying for more school-based instructional materials, student activities and field trips, and stops asking parents and teachers to fund these important components of the classroom learning experience,” Superintendent Dr. Merv Daugherty said. 

The additional funding in the proposed Fiscal Year 2021 operating budget would provide school-based leaders the opportunity to better differentiate resources while meeting the needs of a diverse community of learners.

The Chesterfield County School Board is seeking comments from parents, employees and the community about the proposed calendars for 2020-21, which is available online at mychesterfieldschools.com. 

The School Board is scheduled to vote Feb. 11 on the 2020-21 calendar, as well as the 2020-21 year-round school calendar for Bellwood and Falling Creek elementary schools.

The National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform seeks to improve academic and developmental outcomes for all students in the middle grades annually by identifying schools that exemplify best practices, promote effective policies, develop leadership, and engage their community. This national group of educators is committed to promoting academic achievement and the best practices that go into engaging students, helping them achieve and celebrating the healthy development of our young people.  

Providence Middle School last week joined the ranks of Chesterfield County schools to be honored with the national Schools to Watch designation. There are now seven Chesterfield County middle schools with this honor.
