Dale District representative Debbie Bailey was elected chair of the Chesterfield County School Board this week during the board’s annual reorganization meeting. Dorothy Heffron, who represents the Clover Hill District, was selected vice chair for 2020.

In addition, the School Board approved its 2020 schedule during the first meeting of the all-new, five-member board. The other new School Board members are Ann Coker (Bermuda District), Ryan Harter (Matoaca District) and Kathryn Haines (Midlothian District).

As you may know, the School Board and Board of Supervisors have approved construction plans for a new elementary school that soon will be built in the Magnolia Green subdivision. The yet-to-be named new school is slated to open in Fall 2022.

The school division will host a community meeting on Jan. 15 to discuss construction plans. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Winterpock Elementary.

A total of 100 National Board Certified Teachers are now working in Chesterfield County Public Schools. Congratulations to our newest National Board Certified teacher, Anna Gahagan, an honors and AP art history teacher at James River High School, who was pinned at the Annual National Board pinning ceremony last week at the VCU Singleton Center. She achieved National Board Certification in Art/ Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood.

When it comes to the safety and care of Chesterfield County Public Schools students and staff members, every second matters. 

In 2018, the Chesterfield County Public Schools Safety Task Force was created to evaluate current protocols and best practices that ensure the school division is providing a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment. 

This task force’s Work Group No. 2, which focused on school safety, recognized that seconds matter and recommended that the school division purchase an app or a physical alarm system that could alert administrators, law enforcement and first responders to a dangerous threat or emergency situation in a school.

In recognition of this exceptional work, Chesterfield County Public Schools and the Chesterfield Education Foundation will be honoring up to 13 individuals for their superior contributions to the education of Chesterfield County  students. The creation of a Chesterfield County Public Schools Hall of Fame will recognize individuals for making a significant difference in our schools.

Breakout sessions will include topics geared toward administrators, elementary and secondary English teachers, ESL teachers, special education teachers, and literacy leaders. The keynote speaker, who will be announced soon, is a popular literacy leader.
