Language Arts
CCPS is committed to developing independent strategic readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators.  Building upon the best literacy practices, we embrace a comprehensive and balanced literacy model to establish a solid foundation for reading and writing.  Our language arts block integrates shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, writing and word study.
Math

Based on Kathy Richardson’s conceptual math approach, students will be immersed in hands-on learning.  They will participate in math stations to develop their thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Concepts taught include, counting, patterning, sorting, data analysis, internalization of number facts and addition and subtraction strategies. Small teacher lead groups will target specific concepts.

Science

Our science curriculum is designed to provide a learning experience through hands-on scientific investigation.  Students are introduced to the concept of plant and animal classification, the relationship between the sun and earth, seasonal changes, force, motion and natural resources.

Social Studies

Our students will be introduced to the leaders in the history of Virginia and their contributions to the Commonwealth. They will develop basic map skills, learn about Virginia state symbols and explore the economic concepts of goods and services, consumers and producers. Focus of study will also include applying the traits of a good citizen and recognizing that communities include people who have diverse ethnic origins, customs, and traditions, who make contributions to their communities, and who are united as Americans by common principles.

Social and Emotional Learning

We are committed to utilizing the Caring School Community curriculum.  The purpose is to develop and foster a climate within the classroom that is caring, nurturing, inclusive and respectful of all.  Our lessons are incorporated into daily morning and closing meetings, meet ups with students from across grade levels and home sharing activities.
