This one-year course is designed to prepare students for licensure as a Nail Technician by the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology. Students learn to provide salon and spa services that include manicures, pedicures, reflexology, acrylic nails, gel nails, nail tips, nail art, and polishing. Included is a study of safety and sanitation, workplace ethics, the health and science of nail technology, state regulations, and salon operation (management, marketing, and computer software). Students operate, and provide hand and foot-care services in The Nail Spa at CTC. During the second semester, advanced students with their own transportation and no more than two absences may be able to participate in work experiences at approved sites.
To be eligible to take the Virginia Board of Cosmetology Licensing Examination, students must pass both years of Cosmetology, have all competencies completed, and receive 840 hours of instruction. The board requires students to provide two forms of government-issued identification.
