Hull Street Campus

This two year program is designed to prepare students for the Virginia Board for Barbering Licensing Examination. In year one, students study in a clinical lab setting, using mannequins and each other for manipulative practice. The program emphasizes safety and sanitation, communication, and management skills. In year two, students apply their knowledge of barbering skills in a clinical lab setting, using mannequins and live models for manipulative practice. Advanced students with their own transportation and good attendance may be able to work at professional barber shops in the area.

To be eligible to take the Virginia Board of Barbering Licensing Examination, students must pass both years of Barbering, have all competencies completed, and 840 hours of instruction. The board requires students to provide two forms of Government-issued forms of identification.

Courthouse Campus

This two-year program is designed to prepare students for the Virginia Board for Cosmetology Licensing Examination. Students learn to shampoo, style, set, permanent wave, chemically relax and color/treat hair. In addition, students learn to consult, advise, and create personalized service, such as manicures, facials, and makeup for clients. During the second year, students demonstrate learned skills by operating a school-sponsored beauty salon.

To be eligible to take the Virginia Board of Cosmetology Licensing Examination, students must pass both years of Cosmetology, have all competencies completed, and receive 840 hours of instruction. The board requires students to provide two forms of government-issued identification.

Courthouse Campus

This one-year course is designed to prepare students for licensure as a Nail Technician by the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology. Students learn to provide salon and spa services that include manicures, pedicures, reflexology, acrylic nails, gel nails, nail tips, nail art, and polishing. Included is a study of safety and sanitation, workplace ethics, the health and science of nail technology, state regulations, and salon operation (management, marketing, and computer software). Students operate, and provide hand and foot-care services in The Nail Spa at CTC. During the second semester, advanced students with their own transportation and no more than two absences may be able to participate in work experiences at approved sites.
