Fourth Grade

In fourth grade we love to combine our knowledge across the subjects! We complete experiments that use our Math skills and we complete book studies and projects that include Virginia History and Science.

Language Arts

In Language Arts, students will read great books and other forms of texts in both fiction and nonfiction. Students will not only read interesting texts, they will analyze both fiction and nonfiction to understand it even better. They will learn about a wide variety of skills, including author’s purpose, main idea, inferencing, predicting, cause and effect, fact and opinion, synonyms, antonyms, word meanings, homophones and so much more!  Students will be reading both paper and online text independently so they can work on building comprehension and fluency. They will review and be introduced to words that will expand their vocabulary. In writing workshop they will learn how to write with voice, correct grammar, and will expand their ideas. By the end of the year they will be awesome authors!

The students will continue to work on mastering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will be introduced to many new materials such as fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, probability, and elapsed time.

Students will become expert scientists in animals and their habitats, weather, electricity, space, force and motion, plants and Virginia’s own natural resources.  They will use the Scientific Method as they perform different exciting experiments throughout the year! The students will become meteorologists as they learn all about weather; astronomers as they study the planets, sun, moon and Earth; electricians as we study electricity; and so much more!

Social Studies

Students will learn all about Virginia Studies this year! We begin the journey at Jamestown and end it in modern day Virginia. Along the way we learn about the geography of Virginia, the Revolutionary and Civil War, the relocation of the capital, famous Virginians, and so much more!

Family and School Partnership

It is so important for our families, students, and teachers to really partner together to be successful. We have three ways that our amazing families can support the learning that goes on during the school day at home!

  1. Read Everyday! Let your fourth grader read to you, read to them, discuss their favorite parts. Fourth grade is a great time to try out new books (chapter books, graphic novels, nonfiction)!
  2. Study Multiplication Facts with your kids! Students should know up to 12 x 12.
  3. Review your student’s Virginia Studies and Science study guides with them!
