Center Based Gifted (CBG)
CBG Third Grade

The third grade CBG Academy fosters a positive whole child experience by providing a learning environment that builds relationships among our students.  While focusing on social/emotional growth, students learn to collaborate during simulation units that reach across the disciplines. We help to promote higher level thinking skills through the Depth and Complexity model. Some examples of our third grade CBG adventures include delving deeper into the ancient civilizations, designing our own simple machines, hands-on problem solving in mathematics, simulating an entrepreneurial experience, and developing rich writing skills.

CBG Fourth Grade

Our fourth grade CBG Academy is an accelerated and challenging program that supports the CCPS grade level curriculum while facilitating the development of self-directed learners.  We utilize a hands-on approach that reaches across the disciplines promoting critical thinking skills. Depth and complexity, as well as creativity, are emphasized within the classroom.

CBG Fifth Grade

In our fifth grade CBG Academy, we focus on problem-based education with an emphasis on meaningful projects. We have a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students are engaged in self-directed activities with the majority of projects completed in school. We employ the Depth & Complexity strands as thinking strategies engaging the students in work with a purpose.  We encourage and foster critical thinking with a deeper understanding.

Math
In fourth grade, all students, even those in accelerated math and in CBG, take the fourth grade math SOL test. In fifth grade, however, we take the 6th grade SOL test. We have a lot of material to cover in math in 5th grade CBG.

Science
In science, we participate in discovery learning labs for most of our units of study. With each unit of study, students are provided with several study guides and notes as well as enrichment/extension activities.

Social Studies
In social studies, we leave Virginia and explore the world! We study the history, culture, and geography of the continents as well as learn the states and capitals of the U.S. We also examine our Constitution and discuss current events as they apply to us as citizens of our state, our nation, and the world.

21st Century Skills
We emphasize the importance of 21st century learning skills in our blended learning environment. The teachers keep the parents and students informed of all announcements, assignments, and curriculum through a weekly update, shared each Friday.. Teachers and parents communicate via email.
