We will also have a spring run club that will train for the Virginia 529 Kids Run, which will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020. Permission slips will be handed out in the middle of February and the first practice will be on Thursday, February 27.

Family Fitness Night is physical fun for the entire family! Typically held in the second semester, Harrowgate families are invited to move and groove together. A variety of exercise, dance, and fitness activities for every fitness level are available throughout the school. It is fun for all!

At Harrowgate, we are excited to offer our students in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades the opportunity to learn by getting their hands dirty and working in a learning garden!

We are partnering with Greater Richmond Fit4Kids to bring outdoor learning opportunities to Harrowgate on Tuesday afternoons during the school day this year. Classroom teachers will sign up for time slots to bring their children outside to the learning garden where they will have hands-on experience with content based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. For more information, visit their website.

This summer, students participating in our Summer SOAR program tended and harvested veggies from our learning garden. Here are some of our students ready to eat some fresh-picked cucumbers from the garden!

Since 2016, Harrowgate students have been invited to participate in Chesterfield County’s STEAMmania Event.

“We believe that students who develop and use knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be successful in STEAM disciplines also develop problem-solving skills and abilities necessary to successfully engage in a global society. Our hope is that students will see from experience that science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics are everywhere, every day. We think that it is important for students to think about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics as integrative disciplines in authentic situations. STEAM encourages higher level thinking skills and abilities, by facilitating students’ learning and understanding of difficult concepts through application. We hope that the CCPS STEAM Expo and CCPS STEAMmania will “hook” students into lifetime learning!”

Student teams have competed in Minute-to-Win-It and engineering challenges relating to science, technology, art, math, social studies, health, world languages, and music. Minute-To-Win-It Challenge winners share their ribbons.

Teams are rewarded for creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, construction, and many other skills!

Harrowgate is happy to offer both a SOAR Morning and After School program through the 21st Century Learning Centers Grant. The morning program offers a combination of small group work in reading and math reinforced by play on educational software packages MyOn (reading) and DreamBox (math).  Afternoons offer homework help, followed by a variety of enrichment offerings. This has included STEM, sports programs, coding and animation, arts and crafts, cooking, and music.
