Kindergarten Expectations:

By the end of the kindergarten year, your child should be able to demonstrate the following skills consistently and independently.

Reading
  • Recognize 26 upper and lower-case letters
  • Identify & produce 26 letter sounds
  • Identify beginning, ending, and middle sounds of words
  • Identify 31 high frequency words in print and in isolation
  • Recognize & create rhyming words
  • Answer “wh” questions about stories read to them :  who, what, where, when, why, and how
  • Identify important topics in non-fiction selections
Writing/Handwriting
  • Write first and last name legibly
  • Write 26 upper and lower-case letters legibly
  • Writes two to three sentences on a self-selected topic or a teacher prompt.
  • Write all 31 high frequency words
Math
  • Display basic calendar skills
  • Rote count to 100
  • Count up to 15 objects using 1-to-1 correspondence
  • Write and identify numbers up to 15
  • Identify one more/ one less
  • Compare sets of objects to identify more/ less/ same.
Self-Help Skills
  • Raise hand for help
  • Wait turn
  • Share teacher and objects
  • Bathroom independence
  • Follow daily routines (For example:  unpacking/ packing up personal belongings; cleaning up after activities)
  • Zip, tie, snap—coats, pants, shoes
