The mission of Swift Creek Middle School Mathematics teachers is to work in partnership with students, families and community to ensure that each student acquires mathematical knowledge and skills necessary to achieve personal success and to enrich their community.
The Standards of Learning for mathematics identify academic content for essential components of the mathematics curriculum at different grade levels for Virginia’s public schools. Throughout middle school a student’s mathematics education is centered around specific content strands which include: Number and Number Sense; Computation and Estimation; Measurement; Geometry; Probability and Statistics; and Patterns, Functions, and Algebra. The Standards of Learning for each strand progress in complexity at each grade level and throughout the high school courses such as Algebra and Geometry.
The Standards of Learning do not encompass the entire mathematical curriculum at each grade level or course or prescribe how the content should be taught. Swift Creek Middle School teachers go beyond the standards and select instructional strategies and assessment methods appropriate for our students.
Students today require more rigorous mathematical knowledge and skills to pursue higher education, to compete in a technologically sophisticated workforce, and to be informed citizens. The content of the mathematics standards is intended to support the following five goals for students: becoming mathematical problem solvers, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations to model and interpret practical situations. Swift Creek Middle school teachers are dedicated in ensuring that all students are afforded the opportunities to advance mathematically to meet the demands of our ever-changing world. In other words, “Our Sailors are ready to set Sail”.
