Welcome to Wells Music!
In our music classes, I believe that each student has the ability to learn to sing, dance, and play instruments. Music is a learned skill that gets better with intentional practice and guidance. During their time at Wells, students will have the opportunity to play different instruments, like recorders, Boomwhackers, guitars, hand bells, glockenspiel, and drums. Lessons are framed around the Music Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools and county curriculum guide. Wells Music follows an eclectic approach to music pedagogy, using elements from Orff, Dalcroze, Kodaly, Gordon, and Feierabend. While developing music literacy, students regularly dance, sing, and play instruments from various music styles and world cultures.
Students have a 45 minute music class each week. Most of each class will be taught using whole-group instructional techniques with ample opportunities for individual turns and feedback. All learning and skill development will be taught in a sequential child oriented way. Much game play will be included. Musical games always seek to prepare or practice a music skill content area which will enhance the child’s ability to move to, read, and write music. My goal is to to create a safe and inclusive classroom that is conducive to each student’s individualized growth as a musician and a life-long learner.
