Welcome to Second Grade!  This is a year of learning, fostering creativity and building independence.  Below you will find an overview of some of the main concepts we teach this school year.  We look forward to making the 2019-2020 school year the best yet!

In Reading, students are no longer learning to read but rather reading to learn.  We will explore a variety of genres with a heavy focus on fiction and nonfiction text.  Through mini lessons, shared reading and guided reading students will learn about the main idea, cause and effect, author’s purpose, text features and drawing conclusions to name a few!

In Writing, students will explore the writer’s workshop through the Lucy Calkins model.  Throughout the year they will learn how to write personal narratives, create opinion pieces, write about informational text and creatively write.

In Math, students will continue to build on their number sense and learn to add and subtract two digit numbers. Some of the many units we will cover throughout the year will be on telling time, measurement, geometry, and fractions.

We will rotate unit by unit in Science and Social Studies.  Through many hands on experiments and fun lessons, students will learn about magnets, solids, liquids, and gasses, weather, plants and natural resources, animal and plant life cycles, and habitats.  In Social Studies, students will learn about citizenship, geography, Native Americans, Famous Americans, economics and innovations over time.
